Chris Masters Returns to the WWE

Masters Back on Raw Once Again

Jul 28, 2009 Daniel Crudge

After months of internet rumours about backstage meetings with WWE chairman Vince McMahon on a possible return to the WWE, Chris Masters has made his return to ring.

Masters, real name Chris Mordetzky, ended his last run with the company amidst controversy after violating the WWE’s wellness policy for a second time in the November of 2007. Subsequently, Masters appears leaner this time around. After a near two year absence, Masters returned on the July 27th episode of Raw. Following months of rumoured meetings with WWE Chairman, Vince McMahon, his re-debut came in the form a match with MVP which, resulted in a double count out after he applied his patented Master Lock submission move finisher on the outside of the ring. Since the termination of his contract, Masters has been working the independent circuit. It is interesting to note that he, unlike most ex-WWE stars, never piqued the interest of rival company, TNA.

Master Lock Challenge

During his original run, Masters enjoyed quite an impressive push up until his final few months. Upon his debut with the company his Master Lock, a swinging full nelson submission hold, was made to look mammoth and almost unbreakable as he was seen to offer to any opponent in the back the opportunity to take part in the Master Lock Challenge. The stipulations stated that if an opponent could break the hold, they would receive a large cash sum. The hold wasn’t broken officially until late 2006 by John Cena, when the challenge was for Cena’s WWE Title belt.

Main Event Push

Masters received a main event push in 2006, partaking in several title matches, as well as engaging in a feud with Shawn Michaels. It was actually on Masters that Cena first debuted his STF finishing hold during a submission title match, which also involved Kurt Angle. Masters was also a participant in the 2006 Elimination Chamber match, which was made famous by the first ever Money in the Bank contract use, which ultimately lead to Edge picking up the title. While Masters went on to chase the Intercontinental Title, he was always a potential main event player up until the final few months before his release.

A Need for Talent

With so many superstars currently injured, including the recent injury of top star Edge on top of the recent releases of both Mr. Kennedy and Umaga, the WWE talent roster is looking rather thin at present. However, it is Smackdown that is suffering most, which makes it interesting that Masters debuted on the companies Raw brand. The WWE is definitely in need of potential main eventers. With Masters now on Raw and if he resumes the push that he once enjoyed, the question begs, will this potentially free up talent to make the transfer to the blue brand.
