Mysterio Reported to Have Violated WWE Wellness Policy

Recent breaking news reported on WWE.com has reported that Rey Mysterio has been given a thirty day suspension, making no secret of its link to the WWE´s drug policy.

In what has seemed a surprise to most in the wrestling community, news was released that Rey Mysterio, real name Oscar Gutierrez, has been suspended for a term of thirty days. The suspension period is standard in the company for any superstar´s violation of the company´s wellness policy. With Jeff Hardy recently gone and with Rey currently holding the brand´s Intercontinental Championship, there could not have been a worst time for this suspension to have occurred.

Rey Mysterio´s History with Drugs

The announcement of Mysterio´s suspension has indeed come as a shock to many. Mysterio is one of the superstars that has never found himself on the bench before over any indescrepancies over the wellness policy in the past. However, when the drug scandle hit the public eye back in 2006 following the Benoit story, Sports Illustrated ran a story naming several superstars that were on the list of Benoit´s disgraced doctor, who was imprisoned for ten years in a federal prison for ´illegally dispensing perscription drugs´. Sports Illustrated suggested that the initials on the list, O. G. refered to Oscar Gutierrez, which was later confirmed by ABCNews.com. According to the site, Mysterio had been illegally supplied with a large number of perscription medication, with the option of refills. It was soon after the release of this information, on top of both the death of Eddie Guerrero and the Benoit incident that lead to the implimentation of the WWE´s wellness policy.

But it is not hard to understand why a superstar such as Mysterio might dabble in such medication. The WWE, and especially Vince McMahon, seem to have a penchant for pushing the biggest guys they can find. with superstars weighing up around the 220-320 Ib area, a superstar as small as Mysterio might feel pressured to to increase in size, it has been suggested. Whatever the reason, it is not good for the WWE to lose such a popular superstar, or have a fan favourite, especially with the kids, reputation tarnished.

Rey Mysterio´s Intercontinental Championship

Mysterio´s run as Intercontinental Champion has been an undoubtedly exciting road, hefting the title into a more mainevent picture than it has been recently in his epic rivalry with Chris Jericho, which spanned a number of pay-per-views with some awesome stipulated match-ups. With the prestige the rivalry awarded the title, Mysterio has been enged in another high-profile rivalry with up-and-coming superstar, Dolph Ziggler. It has been reported on prowrestlingscoops.com that Rey was schedualed to drop the title at the last pay-per-view to the company´s up-and-comer, but plans had been changed by Vince at Mysterio´s request to have a meaningful long run with the title. With the report of Mysterio´s suspension however, it would seem plans will change.

Mysterio was schedualed to have another match with Ziggler at the up coming Breaking Point pay-per-view, which if reports are correct, he was schedualed to retain his title. But now it would seem the plans are for him to drop the title to Ziggler at Tuesday´s Smackdown tapings, as reported by various wrestling news sites. It is interesting to note that the suspension did not come into effect immediately, and he has been granted working one more date before it comes into full effect. Usually in these situations the superstar would be stripped of the title, absent from the screening. However, this time it is not the case.

Smackdown Loses Another Star

Smackdown is looking in bad shape as far as the face roster goes. Even with the return of The Undertaker, the loss of both Jeff Hardy and Rey Mysterio, both such massive fan favourites is obviously going to show its effects on the show. despite Mysterio working in what is traditionally considered a mid-card position, his popularity propelled his match-ups into a more main event feel. It is quite possible that the WWE might have used him in some main event capacity also in the near future. Now it is left to the WWE to continue to groom and push hard both Matt Hardy, who is coming off the back of a previous massive heel turn, which fans won´t soon forget, as well as John Morrison, whose though impressive talents in the ring and likable personality, likewise has to contend with his years as a hated heel. The loss of Mysterio at this time, even just for a month, will be great on the Smackdown brand.

i think that rey should just stay as he is(not the drug part). He is a likeable superstar and being small is what makes people like him so much.
