The latest shocking news being reported over the internet is that Shane McMahon, son of WWE Chairman Vince McMahon has quit his position with the company.

The press release regarding Shane’s leaving was published on WWE.com, where he declared that it was ‘’with great sadness’’ that he would be resigning his position with the company that four generations of his family, including him, built. He thanked the fans, the WWE Superstars and his father for the great education that he received over the years in his various roles within the WWE, stating his resignation as coming into effect on the 1st January 2010.

The news has come as a shock, not just to wrestling fans, but to the locker room as well. Prowrestlingscoops has reported that even those close to Shane had no idea of his decision before it was announced. There has also been no word as to why he has chosen to leave his position with the family business after so many of years working in it. Shane has played a major part in the WWE’s history, especially on screen, engaging in several high profile storylines with major WWE superstars.

Shane McMahon as a WWE Superstar

Shane’s last angle on screen was his main event level feud with Randy Orton’s faction, Legacy. An important and major storyline on Raw considering the feeling held for Orton’s partners, Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes, as being the ‘future of the company’. The storyline was a solidarity angle, with the McMahon family trying to match the evil machinations of The Legacy, following Orton punting Vince McMahon in the head on an episode of Raw. Shane faced off with each member in singles matches, as well as a 6-man tag match, which had Triple H’s WWE Championship on the line, the latter in a losing effort before disappearing from TV.

In the past Shane has been involved in other major angles including the infamous Corporation faction, which brought The Rock to prominence in its feud with Stone Cold Steve Austin and others, as well as high profile feuds with Kane, The Rock, Kurt Angle, Triple H, D-X and others. He also held two titles, the now defunct European Title and the also defunct Hardcore title. He will always be remembered for his reckless but undeniably exciting Street Fight matches, which would almost always inevitably include a suicide dive from the ring post to the announcers table outside the ring.

Shane McMahon's Backstage Roles

Backstage, Shane was Executive Vice President of WWE Global Media, which involved him working out overseas television deals, as well as live event bookings and the creation of WWE.com. In 2006 he held talks with MMA fight promotion PRIDE, before its demise, into the possibility of the companies working together, coming close to a deal. He also had a role in working out bookings and storylines. Wrestling news sites have speculated future plans for the McMahon to involve himself in his Mother’s, Linda McMahon, campaign for senate, although this has not been confirmed.

Although no news has been released recently as to the reasons behind Shane’s leaving, internet news sites have reported over the years of Shane’s comparatively minor role, especially in bookings, to his sister Stephanie, who holds the position Executive Vice President, Creative Development & Operations. However, no news of such has been reported recently. Shane will always been remembered as a prominent character on WWE programming and will undoubtedly be missed by fans of the WWE, worldwide.
