Here is a look at the best matches seen by fans since the World Wrestling Federation became World Wrestling Entertainment back in May 2002.
Counting down the Top 10 matches in the past seven years: 10. The Rock vs Kurt Angle vs The Undertaker, Vengeance 2002 This Triple Threat Match for the Undisputed WWE Championship is one of the best of its kind. Full of momentum changes and fast-paced counter-wrestling, its most notable feature was the three participants' use of each other's respective finishing moves, a hallmark of not only many of The Rock's matches, but of Kurt Angle's as well. Rarely does The Undertaker take anything other than centre stage in a match, but in this classic, all three competitors were on equally stellar form. The Rock eventually emerged victorious to retain his Undisputed WWE Championship. 9. Brock Lesnar vs Kurt Angle, SmackDown, September 18th 2003 This Iron Man Match between two of the best amateur wrestlers of all time produced an hour of non-stop excitement. The two were notorious for leaving each other battered and bruised during their many encounters, despite their great friendship outside the ring - neither held back in this match, with Lesnar eventually winning by five falls to four to regain the WWE Championship, in a match voted the best in SmackDown's history by WWE fans. 8. Shawn Michaels vs Chris Benoit vs Triple H, WrestleMania XX Another top-class Triple Threat Match, this time on the Grandest Stage Of Them All, and featuring entirely different participants. Chris Benoit won his first World Heavyweight Championship in a match packed with submission holds and hard hitting. The chemistry between close friends Michaels and Triple H was evident, while Benoit's expertise allowed him to work well with both men. A match truly worthy of the main event of WrestleMania XX. 7. Edge vs Mick Foley, WrestleMania 22 This Hardcore Match between two of the bravest and most deranged in-ring competitors in recent years produced a bloody battle that will be long remembered by anyone who witnessed it. The final spot, involving Edge spearing Foley from the ring apron to the arena floor, through a table which had been set on fire, will remain one of WrestleMania's most iconic moments for many years to come. 6. Los Guerreros vs Kurt Angle & Chris Benoit vs Rey Mysterio & Edge, Survivor Series 2002 A Triple Threat Tag Team Elimination Match for the recently-created WWE Tag Team Championships, this match is near the top of the list of all-time great tag team matches. All three teams wrestled at breakneck speed, with the finish seeing Eddie Guerrero lock in the Lasso from El Paso submission move on his lifelong friend Rey Mysterio for the victory and the titles. All six participants would later go on to win World titles in WWE - even future ECW Champion Chavo Guerrero - a sign of the pure talent on display in this match. 5. The Rock vs 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin, WrestleMania XIX Very little needs to be said about this match, other than the fact that it was an encounter between The Rock and 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin at WrestleMania. The two were the biggest stars of their generation, and in Austin's final WWE match, the two put on a fantastic show together for one last time. After three Rock Bottoms and a Stone Cold Stunner, Austin finally succumbed to The Great One, giving The Rock his first WrestleMania win over his greatest foe, at the third attempt. 4. Shawn Michaels vs Kurt Angle, WrestleMania 21 The build to this match focused on Angle trying to prove himself a better wrestler than Michaels - however, after seeing the match itself, it is virtually impossible to choose between these two all-time greats. A 25-minute epic saw numerous changes of momentum and examples of near-perfect technical skill, and the unique finish saw The Heartbreak Kid finally tap out after an excruciating two minutes in the Olympic Hero's Ankle Lock. 3. Kurt Angle vs Chris Benoit, Royal Rumble 2003 On a purely technical basis, this match can scarcely be faulted. A near-perfect example of hold and counter-hold, of how to change the pace of a match, and of how to keep the crowd guessing at every moment. Angle and Benoit are two of the best in-ring performers of their generation, and this WWE Championship match, won by Angle, is a must-see for anyone looking to study the art of professional wrestling. 2. Shawn Michaels vs Ric Flair, WrestleMania XXIV The near-opposite of Benoit and Angle's encounter, what this match lacked in technical expertise - mostly thanks to Ric Flair's advancing years - it made up in its ability to draw in the audience. With Flair's career on the line at WrestleMania, Michaels guided the ageing Hall of Famer to an emotionally intense and fittingly poignant final match. Before delivering the final Sweet Chin Music that would end the career of the Nature Boy, Michaels uttered five words to his former idol that will live forever in wrestling lore - "I'm sorry. I love you." 1. Shawn Michaels vs The Undertaker, WrestleMania XXV The Phenom vs Mr. WrestleMania. This match had 'classic' written all over it, but few could have expected exactly what was to come. The match between the two Texans in Houston produced an all-time great encounter, wth Michaels managing against all odds to convince many fans that maybe, just maybe, he could be the man to break The Undertaker's 16-0 unbeaten streak at WrestleMania. It was not to be, however, and after a match packed with counter-wrestling and punctuated by a horrifying collision between The Undertaker's head and the arena floor, Michaels was caught mid-air in attempting a moonsault, and The Deadman's Tombstone piledriver had claimed another victim.
