The Ten Most Historically Significant Matches in 'Mania History

There have been many memorable matches in Wrestlemania history but ten stand out as having the most lasting impact on the business.

These are not necessarily the ten greatest matches in Wrestlemania history, they are the ones that had the most historical significance.

10. Chris Jericho vs. Chris Benoit vs. Christian vs. Shelton Benjamin vs. Edge vs. Kane(Money In the Bank Ladder Match) (Wrestlemania XXI)

This innovative concept was the brainchild of WWE superstar Chris Jericho. The idea is that six men (now eight) compete in a ladder match to grab a briefcase containing a world title shot at any point in the next year (365 days). The match itself was an amazing athletic exhibition. Great performances by all involved, especially Shelton Benjamin, who was the star of the match. The match, though, is remembered for launching the career of Edge (the winner), who has become one of the biggest stars in the WWE. The match has become an annual Wrestlemania event and it is used much like King of the Ring used to be, to elevate a young star to the next level.

9. Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart (Wrestlemania X)This was the first, and to this point, only brother vs. brother match in Wrestlemania history (Kane and Undertaker are not real life brothers). They set the bar very high for Matt and Jeff, who will become the second pair of brothers to face off at Wrestlemania this year. This match was the greatest opener in Wrestlemania history. This was an outstanding match with great wrestling sequences involving well-executed maneuvers and reversals, holds and counterholds. This was the first of two matches for Bret that night as he would go on to win the WWE title later in the night. It also had a shocking ending that saw Owen defeat Bret. This victory established Owen as a legit main-event level competitor and he would go on to challenge Bret for the title later in the year.

8. The Rock vs. Hollywood Hulk Hogan (Wrestlemania XVIII)This was a dream match between two of the biggest icons in WWE history. This marked Hogan first Wrestlemania appearance in nine years. He showed very little ring rust as he and the Rock put on a very entertaining match. What really made the match was the great fan participation from a hot Toronto crowd. They were hanging on every move and in a nostalgic display, were solidly in the corner of the Hulkster. This also mared the Rock's first big Wrestlemania win, after losing in the main event the three previous years.

7. The Dudleys vs. The Hardys vs. Edge & Christian(WWE Tag Team Titles Ladder Match) (Wrestlemania XVI)

This was the first and perhaps best of several ladder matches involving these three teams. These six men put forth one of the most amazing displays of creative offense in WWE history. They took the ladder match to a whole new level. This also marked the first titles won by Edge and Christian, who have both gone on to become big singles stars, especially Edge.

6. Randy Savage vs. Ricky Steamboat (Intercontinental Title Match) (Wrestlemania III)This was the first great Wrestlemania match. This match featured great back and forth action and numerous near falls. Everything clicked between these two who showed great chemistry throughout the match. This match marked the first time that a men's singles title changed hands at Wrestlemania. It was also Ricky Steamboat's only title win in the WWE. This was also a sign of things to come for Savage who would go on to have several more memorable Wrestlemania matches.
