WWE Night of Champions 09 Preview & Live ResultsPredictions for Smackdown Matches Scheduled for July 26th 2009
The Wachovia Centre in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania plays host to Night of Champions, where every WWE Title belt will be on the line!
Smackdown goes into Night of Champions with four confirmed title holders on the roster, although come the end of the show they could have three, four or five depending on what takes place during the bout for the Unified Tag Team Championships. Michelle McCool (c) Vs. Melina for the WWE Womens ChampionshipAnnounced just two days before Night of Champions this one feels like it has been rushed onto the card just to meet the 'every championship on the line' stipulation of the pay per view. Melina and McCool have been feuding for a while on Smackdown but it hasn't really progressed past both diva's desire for the WWE Womens Championship, which McCool won in a downright tedious match at The Bash. Hopefully the two will have a better match at Night of Champions which doesn't focus around Melina having an injured ankle. Prediction: McCool to retain the title by cheating. Rey Mysterio(c) Vs. Dolph Ziggler for the Intercontinental ChampionshipZiggler has made a huge impact since arriving on the blue brand, starting by defeating The Great Khali in his first Pay Per View appearance at The Bash. He has since focused his attention on the Intercontinental Championship and it's holder; Rey Mysterio. Mysterio has been subject to three severe beatings at the hands of Ziggler in the weeks leading up to Night of Champions, but it is still unclear how the New-Age Mr. Perfect will cope when he isn't able to hit Rey from behind. The constant attacks may also have motivated the Intercontinental Champion to gain some revenge when they finally meet one on one in the ring, something he has so far been unable to do. Should Ziggler lose this match it may not be the last time the fans see him at Night of Champions, as Jericho is on the look-out for a new partner and seems to have looked upon Ziggler favourably in recent weeks. If he were to be chosen, it would be a similar situation to how Jericho won the titles in the first place, losing to Mysterio then being a surprise entrant in the Tag Title match. Prediction: Mysterio to gain revenge and retain the Intercontinental Championship. Chris Jericho & ??? (c) Vs. Priceless for the Unified Tag Team ChampionshipsThis has the potential to be the most interesting point of the night. Priceless want to make Legacy an all-championship outfit, but to do that they will have to defeat not only Jericho but an opponent that they have no time what so ever to prepare for. Speculation is rife surrounding who Jericho will choose to replace the injured Edge as his partner, and although Dolph Ziggler is the most obvious candidate it just seems a little TOO obvious to be the right answer, unless it is with a twist as outlined above. There hasn't been much confrontation between the two teams in the lead up to Night of Champions due mostly to Edge's injury, which has actually served to keep this bout feeling fresh and interesting where others have become stale. Regardless of who Jericho chooses this is sure to be a great match. Prediction: Failing the Ziggler theory, Jericho to choose someone else, lose the match and then begin a feud with them over the loss. C.M Punk (c) Vs. Jeff Hardy for the World Heavyweight ChampionshipHardy and Punk have been at each others throats since Extreme Rules, when Punk cashed in his Money in the Bank and defeated Jeff for the title he'd won just a few seconds earlier. Since then Jeff has been determined to win back the title he feels he never fairly lost and Punk has tried every trick in the book to avoid losing it, while slowly transforming from a fan favourite into a hated villain. Hardy looked set to win the title at The Bash until two well placed boots (one under the rope to break a sure three count and one into the side of the referee's head) from Punk handed him the victory but not the gold. The writers have done a great job of playing Punk's 'Straight Edge' lifestyle off against Hardy's 'live for the moment' attitude and although it is clear they can deliver in the ring, fans may feel they have seen all they can from these two guys in past meetings. Punk and Hardy will have to pull something special out of the bag to prevent this from becoming 'just another rematch'. Prediction: Jeff to win the title then take a severe beating from Punk after the bell.
