WWE Survivor Series 08 Main Events ReviewReturning Superstars Make History while The Undertaker Buries Show
Controversy surrounded the defence of the WWE Championship at Survivor Series on the 23rd of November at the TD Banknorth Garden in Boston, MA. Read on to find out why.
Survivor Series Pay Per Views usually have a few twists in store and 2008's instalment was no different. With a pre-show attack, Superstars returning from injury and even Superstars returning from 'hell' to claim title gold, there was plenty to hold the fans attention and a few moments that will have had them on the very 'Edge' of their seats. Before reading on why not read: Jeff Hardy attacked Pre ShowA breaking news update appeared on WWE.Com around 5 hours before the show and announced that Jeff Hardy had been found unconscious in his hotel and had been rushed to a nearby emergency room. The way the WWE worked this situation was a stroke of genius. Speculation was rife and before long it had been picked up by several news websites, giving real credibility and making fans who had assumed it was a storyline reconsider. It wouldn't be until the end of the WWE Championship match that they would discover if it was or wasn't an angle. Casket MatchThe first of the Main Event matches was the Casket Match between The Undertaker and Big Show and was the best of the matches they have had to date. Both looked fresh and prepared for the match, and even Show's hammy acting with regards to not daring to touch the casket couldn't dampen the crowds' enthusiasm. Both Superstars spent time inside the casket but escaped before the lid could be closed fully. Towards the end of the match Show decided he'd had enough and tipped over the casket, rendering it unusable, and began to make his way up the ramp. Fiery pyro's stopped him in his tracks and dazzled the crowd before a new casket was brought out onto the stage. Big Show stood it on its end with ease and looked to be dominating The Undertaker, until the Deadman suddenly turned the tables and whipped Show back at the waiting casket, which fell and slammed shut, encasing the giant inside. All in all a very entertaining match which will hopefully be an end to this rivalry, letting The Undertaker move onto whomever he will be facing at what will likely be his final Wrestlemania. WWE Championship 'Triple Threat' MatchJust before the promo video for this match began, J.R and Tazz announced that Jeff Hardy was NOT in a fit state to wrestle and therefore the match would be a 1 on 1 bout. They then apologised that the promo was based mainly around Jeff, which again was a great touch by the creative team, adding even more credibility to the chance that it may have been real. The match was pretty run of the mill, with Kozlov and HHH slugging it out with neither man getting a clear advantage. As HHH hit a pedigree with his last ounce of strength and both men lay prone in the middle of the ring, Vikki Guerrero appeared at the top of the ramp and announced that it would still be a triple threat match as 'He's here!'. The crowd began to buzz and just as everyone expected Jeff to appear, Edge's music hit the speakers and the Ultimate Opportunist sprinted to the ring and speared HHH. The fans didn't have to wait long to see Hardy, as he ran out seconds later and attacked Edge, before accidentally hitting HHH and then Kozlov with a steel chair. Edge again took advantage of the situation, spearing Hardy and covering HHH to become the new WWE Champion. It was an exciting ending to what appeared to be a bland match, and where it will go from here is anyone's guess. Edge Vs. Jeff is one possibility, but only if HHH is willing to stand aside and stay out of the title picture for a while. John Cena's Triumphant ReturnIf it wasn't for the fact it was John Cena's return match, the WWE Championship match would no doubt have been top of the bill due to its brilliantly worked ending. In actuality Cena and Jericho main evented in a match that was only ever going to have one conclusion. For someone who had been out of action for a little over three months with a career threatening injury, and whose first broadcast match back was a title shot at one of the biggest Pay Per View's of the year, Cena didn't do too badly. Rather predictably the match revolved around Jericho targeting Cena's freshly repaired neck, and Cena lacking a bit of confidence after being out for so long. Cena eventually regained his confidence and defeated Jericho by pinfall after delivering an F-U, and made history as it was the first time both titles had changed hands at a Survivor Series event.
